What is Iyengar Yoga?

A precise, mindful and systematic approach

Yoga is one of the oldest systems of personal development in the world. This system of balancing the body, mind and spirit was formulated by ancient yogis, who understood our essential nature and realised a way to utilise our inner resources to live in harmony with ourselves and the environment.

Iyengar yoga classes are carefully structured to support students in their progression from the simple through to the more advanced poses. Students are encouraged to work steadily and with awareness, cultivating confidence and sensitivity over time.

B.K.S. Iyengar (1918-2014) the father of Iyengar Yoga, introduced the use of props to modern postural yoga – such as belts, blocks and blankets. These are used in classes to avoid the risk of injury or strain, to intensify work in asana, or to support the body in poses that are held for a longer period so that their therapeutic benefit can be felt. The use of props makes Iyengar Yoga suitable for all ages and abilities.

Experienced teachers

Iyengar Yoga training is extremely rigorous and teachers have to reach a high standard of personal practice and teaching before they are certified. The training process can take anywhere between 2-4 years of regular mentorship and ongoing assessment before teachers become accredited. The training program includes study of and written assignments on anatomy, philosophy, asana (postures) and pranayama (breath-work). Teachers are also required to become familiar with common health conditions and injuries so that they can accomodate a variety of needs in class.
